we were declared a heritage area ( Shaugnessy) with strict building codes being applied and strict guidelines that were to preserve our heritage landscaping. one of the owners of Onni .. a huge property development company has had approved by city council ripping out three of its neighbours beautiful 80 year old landscaping and in our case, replaced it with a black chain link fence ( for their security) They we’re able to do this because the old property lines set in 1908 were not completely accurate in some parts and were approx 2 feet out. In 2 years we have not been able to get any sort of help or information from city hall about how we can preserve our ‘heritage’ look . We lost approx 25% of our home value because of the restrictions applied in order to preserve our heritage area, however when a big property developer buys, none of the same rules apply , they can destroy rather than comply . I wonder what city councillors and permit departments get from developers that they can have such immunity to the same rules as regular home owners?

I can’t comment on your specifics, but as a general comment there seems very little enforcement remaining amongst city staff, whether it be removal of large, older, healthy trees or demolition instead of deconstruction of homes to be replaced.

so true, and proves almost impossible to get hold of anyone as office working hours are 2 till 4 pm in permit departments. It’s crazy , and there’s no accountability for anyone breaking ‘the rules’ especially big developers.

Sadly Our city has become a kind of international cooperation and its beauty is a great selling point , alas, I dont feel the local city people have much control, perhaps some super person or people will slow the title wave and get the powers to be to take their tower building stuff to somewhere else, what will be ,will be

Douglas, do not lose heart. The only civic party that can turn this ship around at the next election is TEAM. Follow them, consider joining them—they are the best we have.

Why don’t we go to nerve centre of it and make changes to the Vancouver Charter. Possibly provisions or conditions can be included to give residents more input. It is our tax dollars that are being used against us.

Excellent thought Stuart, and thanks for subscribing. A TEAM majority on Council after the October election might very well revisit the V charter for several reasons. We are all about Neighbourhood consultation among other priorities. Are you a TEAM member?

I’m not a Team member but I’d like to help

Maybe it's time for those in opposition to this type of non-plan planning to abandon egos and join together under one banner instead of fracturing the vote and losing out on having any say going forward.

Just a thought.

I too am very concerned that there are 3 credible candidates in Hardwick, Coupar, and Sim. This will just split the vote, resulting in Stewart being elected again. It's an insane idea, but I'd rather these three ran for Council leaving Stewart isolated with 8-9 Councillors not on board with his views. Maybe then we would have good governance.

I see others have weighed in on your line of thinking, will leave it to them

I agree - what are you proposing?

Not sure, some coalition I guess, so the ones with a chance will be elected. I'm not up on all of the opposition at this point though.
